La ciudad amurallada a pie, como fue diseñada

Jai Singh II trazó Jaipur en 1727 sobre una cuadrícula de nueve cuadrados, con anchos de calle fijados por norma y cada oficio asignado a su propia manzana. Todo el plano fue construido para caminarse, y caminarlo es la única forma de que el plano se vuelva visible.

Cuatro horas, completamente dentro de la ciudad vieja.

Hawa Mahal

Donde empieza el paseo. Construido en 1799 por el Maharajá Sawai Pratap Singh, diseñado por Lal Chand Ustad, en arenisca roja y rosa como extensión del zenana del City Palace.

953 ventanas en cinco plantas, y con menos de un metro de profundidad en la mayor parte de su altura, es una pantalla más que un edificio, hecha para que las mujeres de la corte pudieran observar las procesiones en la calle sin ser vistas. Se dice que la fachada se parece a la corona de Krishna.

Desde la calle de enfrente, con la luz de la mañana, es lo más fotografiado de Rajastán.

La cuadrícula

Luego dentro de ella: Chhoti Chopad y Badi Chopad, los grandes cruces del plano de 1727, y los bazares que irradian de ellos.

Johari Bazaar para joyería, kundan y meenakari, las dos técnicas por las que la ciudad es conocida. Tripolia y Maniharon ka Rasta para pulseras de laca, hechas sobre una llama frente a ti. Bapu Bazaar para textiles y zapatillas mojari. Y las callejuelas donde especias, dulces y flores todavía se venden donde el plano las colocó hace trescientos años.

Templos y patios

Los pequeños templos dentro de las manzanas residenciales, que no ven visitantes en absoluto, y los havelis detrás de sus puertas, la mayoría todavía habitados.
