El desierto de verdad, y de vuelta el mismo día

Khimsar está a unos 300 km de Jaipur, al noroeste en dirección a Nagaur, y es donde el matorral cede por fin ante la arena de verdad. El día dura quince horas por esa distancia, y conviene reservarlo sabiendo que la carretera es una parte considerable.

Lo que obtiene a cambio son dunas sin la maquinaria turística de Jaisalmer, que queda otros 280 km más allá.

Las dunas

La arena de Khimsar ocupa un bolsillo del Thar detrás de la aldea, y el safari se adentra en ella en jeep a última hora de la tarde, cuando la luz se alarga y el calor ha caído. Las dunas no son inmensas, pero son auténticas, y no hay nadie sobre ellas.

El atardecer desde una cresta allí fuera, sin nada en ninguna dirección, es la razón por la que la gente hace este viaje.

Las aldeas

Los asentamientos bishnoi y jat están repartidos por esta tierra, y la visita para en uno. Vale la pena conocer a los bishnoi: una comunidad fundada en el siglo XV sobre veintinueve principios, varios de los cuales prohíben talar árboles verdes o dañar animales. En 1730, trescientos sesenta y tres de ellos murieron defendiendo un bosquecillo de khejris de las hachas de un maharajá, y por eso el antílope cervicapra y la chinkara siguen pastando libres alrededor de sus aldeas cuando se los caza en todas partes.

Probablemente verá los dos, además de zorros del desierto y muchísimas aves.

El fuerte

El fuerte de Khimsar es de 1523, construido por un hijo del gobernante Rathore de Jodhpur, y parte de él sigue siendo residencia familiar. El exterior y el entorno son el atractivo.

Práctico

Quince horas de puerta a puerta, coche privado con aire acondicionado y conductor, y guía todo el tiempo. Salida temprana, regreso tarde.

Las noches del desierto son frías de noviembre a febrero: lleve una chaqueta, aunque el día haya sido caluroso. Las comidas, la tasa del safari y cualquier paseo en camello se pagan allí.
