Leopardos, a veinte minutos del City Palace

Jhalana es una extensión de bosque seco de 23 kilómetros cuadrados dentro de los límites de la ciudad de Jaipur, y alberga una de las poblaciones de leopardos más densas de toda la India, alrededor de treinta a cuarenta animales en esa pequeña área. Amagarh, abierto más recientemente al otro lado de la ciudad, es la segunda reserva.

Eso es genuinamente inusual. La mayoría de los grandes felinos necesitan espacio y evitan a las personas; estos viven junto a una ciudad de cuatro millones de personas.

El safari

Un 4x4 abierto por senderos forestales con un naturalista y un guía del departamento forestal. Dos turnos al día, mañana y tarde, y la reserva que te toca se confirma al reservar en lugar de elegirse.

Los avistamientos rondan el 60 al 70 por ciento en los buenos meses, lo cual es alto para un leopardo salvaje en cualquier lugar. No son alimentados ni cebados, la densidad simplemente es tan alta, y los animales están habituados a los vehículos.

Qué más hay allí

Hiena rayada, chacal, zorro del desierto, nilgó, chital, liebre india y puercoespín. La observación de aves es fuerte: pitta india durante el monzón, moscaretas paraíso, lechuzas, y rapaces sobre la cresta.

Las ruinas de un pozo escalonado y un pequeño templo se encuentran dentro del bosque, y la cresta Aravalli te ofrece el perfil de la ciudad desde un ángulo inesperado.

Dos opciones

Un jeep compartido, o un gypsy privado, que vale la pena para fotógrafos, porque un vehículo privado se detiene donde quieras y no tiene las cámaras de otras cinco personas en medio.

Los turnos de la mañana ven más. De octubre a junio es la temporada; el monzón cierra los senderos.

Lleva colores apagados, sin perfume, y habla en voz baja, esto importa más aquí que en un parque grande, porque el bosque es pequeño y el sonido se propaga.

Los permisos son limitados por turno y se liberan con antelación. Reserva pronto, particularmente para el gypsy privado.
