La ville fortifiée à pied, comme elle a été conçue

Jai Singh II a tracé Jaipur en 1727 sur une grille de neuf carrés, avec des largeurs de rue fixées par règle et chaque métier affecté à son propre bloc. Tout le plan a été conçu pour être parcouru à pied, et le parcourir à pied est la seule façon de rendre le plan visible.

Quatre heures, entièrement à l'intérieur de la vieille ville.

Hawa Mahal

Là où la marche commence. Construit en 1799 par le Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, conçu par Lal Chand Ustad, en grès rouge et rose comme extension du zenana du City Palace.

953 fenêtres sur cinq étages, et moins d'un mètre de profondeur sur la plus grande partie de sa hauteur, c'est un écran plutôt qu'un bâtiment, fait pour que les femmes de la cour puissent observer les processions dans la rue sans être vues. On dit que la façade ressemble à la couronne de Krishna.

Depuis la rue d'en face, dans la lumière du matin, c'est la chose la plus photographiée du Rajasthan.

La grille

Puis à l'intérieur : Chhoti Chopad et Badi Chopad, les grands carrefours du plan de 1727, et les bazars qui en rayonnent.

Johari Bazaar pour la bijouterie, kundan et meenakari, les deux techniques pour lesquelles la ville est connue. Tripolia et Maniharon ka Rasta pour les bracelets en laque, fabriqués sur une flamme devant vous. Bapu Bazaar pour les textiles et les chaussons mojari. Et les ruelles où épices, douceurs et fleurs se vendent encore là où le plan les a placées il y a trois cents ans.

Temples et cours

Les petits temples à l'intérieur des quartiers résidentiels, qui ne voient aucun visiteur, et les havelis derrière leurs portes, la plupart encore habitées.

City Palace et Jantar Mantar depuis l'extérieur, avec votre guide expliquant ce qui se trouve à l'intérieur si vous voulez revenir avec un billet.

Quatre heures à pied sur de la pierre inégale et à travers la circulation, chaussures plates, et eau.
