The route that adds Shekhawati
Most Rajasthan itineraries skip Mandawa, which is a mistake. It is the gateway to the Shekhawati region, and Shekhawati holds the largest concentration of painted buildings anywhere in the world.
Day 1: Mandawa
Drive from Delhi, roughly six hours.
The town is called an open-air art gallery and for once the phrase is accurate. Nineteenth-century merchant families built havelis here and covered every wall, inside and out, with frescoes — gods, hunting scenes, trains, gramophones, aeroplanes, and Europeans in hats, painted by artists who had never seen any of those things.
Mandawa Fort from 1755 sits above it. Walk the lanes at the end of the day when the low sun brings the pigment up.
Day 2: Jaipur
About four hours south. Amber Fort, the City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, and an evening in the bazaars.
Day 3: Pushkar
A small town around a lake that Hindus hold was formed where Brahma dropped a lotus. There are perhaps a dozen Brahma temples in the world and this is the principal one.
Fifty-two ghats ring the water, and the whole town is strictly vegetarian with no alcohol, eggs or meat inside the municipal limits — enforced, not aspirational.
The camel fair falls in Kartik, usually November, when fifty thousand animals and a quarter of a million people arrive at once.
A warning worth taking: men will approach you at the ghats offering "Pushkar passport" blessings, then demand large donations. A polite, firm no is all that is needed.
Days 4–5: Jodhpur
Mehrangarh on its 120-metre rock, unbreached, with cannonball scars on the second gate from a Jaipur siege. Jaswant Thada in marble thin enough that the sun comes through it. The blue city beneath.
