Full description

The three cities, properly spaced

Rajasthan gets compressed into two-day itineraries all the time and it does not survive the treatment. Six days is the point where Jodhpur stops being a fort visit and starts being a city, and where Udaipur gets an evening on the water rather than a rushed afternoon.

Jaipur, two days

Amber Fort in the morning, when the light is on the Ganesh Pol and the coach parties have not arrived. City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal in the old city. An evening in the bazaars around Johari and Tripolia, which is where Jaipur actually makes its money — gemstone cutting, block printing, enamel work.

Jodhpur, the Blue City

Mehrangarh is the fort that changes people's minds about Indian forts. It rises 120 metres straight off the rock, the walls are unbreached, and the museum inside is the best-run in Rajasthan. Look down from the ramparts and the blue houses make sense — the colour was originally a lime-and-copper wash that kept termites out.

Jaswant Thada, the white marble cenotaph below it, is where you go when the fort has exhausted you.

Udaipur, on the lakes

City Palace along the Pichola waterfront, the Jagdish Temple, and a boat out at sunset when the Aravalli hills go flat and dark behind the water. Saheliyon ki Bari, the garden built for a queen's retinue, if there is time.

How it is run

Private air-conditioned car with a driver for the full six days, including the road legs — Jaipur to Jodhpur is about 330 km, Jodhpur to Udaipur about 250 km, both of them decent highways with places to stop.

Local guides join for the sightseeing days in each city.
