Eight days is the honest length for Rajasthan

The distances are the reason. Jaipur to Udaipur is nearly 400 km, Udaipur to Jodhpur another 250, and every one of those roads passes something worth stopping for. Six days makes it a driving trip. Eight makes it a journey.

Jaipur

The Amber Fort complex above Maota Lake, the City Palace where the former royal family still lives, Jantar Mantar's stone instruments, and Hawa Mahal. An evening in the old-city bazaars — Johari for gemstones, Tripolia for lac bangles and brass.

Pushkar, usually on the road south: a small lake town around one of the very few Brahma temples in the world, with 52 bathing ghats and no meat or alcohol anywhere within the town limits.

Udaipur

The City Palace running along Lake Pichola, the 17th-century Jagdish Temple, and Saheliyon ki Bari, a garden of fountains and marble elephants built for a queen's forty-eight attendants. A boat on the lake at sunset is the evening people describe afterwards.

Jodhpur

Mehrangarh, 120 metres up on sheer rock, is probably the finest fort in India and certainly the best presented. The cannonball scars on the second gate are from a Jaipur siege. Below it, Jaswant Thada in white marble, and the blue lanes of the old city around the clock tower.
