Full description

The deepest stepwell in India, and almost nobody goes.

Chand Baori at Abhaneri is 3,500 steps arranged in thirteen storeys of perfect double-flight geometry, dropping about twenty metres into the ground. It was built between the eighth and ninth centuries, and it works: the water at the bottom stays several degrees cooler than the surface, which in a desert was the whole point.

Standing at the top edge is genuinely disorienting. The steps are cut so precisely that the pattern reads almost like an optical illusion, and photographs do not prepare you for the scale. It is about 95 km from Jaipur on the Agra road, which is why most itineraries skip it and why it is usually quiet.

Beside it is the Harshat Mata temple, badly damaged but with carving still worth the ten minutes.

Galtaji, the monkey temple, sits in a gorge in the hills on the Jaipur side. Natural springs feed a series of sacred tanks cut into the rock, pilgrims bathe in them, and several hundred macaques live around the complex. Eighteenth century, pink sandstone, and the setting does most of the work.

Worth knowing

You cannot walk down into Chand Baori. Access to the steps was closed for safety; you view it from the terrace above, which is where the photograph is anyway.
Abhaneri is about two hours each way, so this is a full seven-hour day for roughly two hours at the sites. Worth it if the architecture interests you; not if you want a light morning.
Watch the monkeys at Galtaji. They take glasses, phones and anything in an open hand, and they are practised at it.
Galtaji requires shoes off at the temple and modest dress.
Abhaneri sits on the Jaipur–Agra road, so it slots neatly into a transfer day if you are heading that way.
