Jaipur is a gem city, not just a fort city

Most of the world's coloured gemstones pass through Jaipur at some point. Emeralds from Zambia, rubies from Mozambique, sapphires from Sri Lanka — cut, polished and set in workshops in the old city by families who have done nothing else for generations. It is the single largest employer here after tourism, and almost no visitor sees it.

Amber Fort first

The hilltop complex above Maota Lake, begun in 1592: the Ganesh Pol gateway, the Sheesh Mahal where mirror fragments turned a single candle into a ceiling of stars, and the courtyards stepping up the ridge. Go early, before the coaches.

The mirror work is a useful thing to see first, because the inlay technique behind it and the jewellery you are about to watch being made come from the same tradition.

The workshop

Then a working atelier. You will see rough stone cut on a wheel, faceted, and polished — the moment a dull pebble turns into something that throws light is genuinely startling the first time.

And you will see kundan and meenakari, the two techniques Jaipur is known for: kundan sets stones in pure gold foil without claws, so the gem appears to float; meenakari is enamel fired onto the reverse of the same piece, so that a necklace has a second, hidden design on its back. That was originally so that the piece was beautiful even when turned over — a courtly idea that stuck.

Artisans work in front of you at the bench, and you can ask them anything. Most have been doing it since they were teenagers.

If you want to buy

You are under no obligation, and you should say so plainly if you would rather not be shown the showroom. If you do buy, ask for a certificate with the stone's weight, treatment and origin stated, and take it — a reputable Jaipur house will give it without being pressed.
