The useful shape for anyone travelling Jaipur → Jodhpur → Udaipur. Instead of paying for two transfers and a tour, this runs the Jodhpur sightseeing between them: picked up in Jaipur at six, the fort and the blue city during the day, and dropped in Udaipur that night.

The drive

Jaipur to Jodhpur is about 330 km, five hours on decent highway through the scrub and millet country of central Rajasthan.

Mehrangarh

The reason to come. It rises 120 metres straight off a rock outcrop above the city, with walls up to 36 metres high, and it was never taken — the cannonball scars on the second gate are from a Jaipur siege that failed.

Inside, the museum is the best-run in Rajasthan: palanquins, howdahs, miniature painting, textiles, and the royal cradles. The palace courtyards — Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal, Sheesh Mahal — are stacked one above another rather than spread out, because there was no room to spread.

From the ramparts the blue city lies directly below, and the colour makes sense from up there in a way it does not at street level: the lime-and-copper wash was a termite repellent that happened to look extraordinary.

Jaswant Thada

The royal cenotaph below the fort, built in 1899 from marble sheets thin enough that they glow when the sun is behind them.

The old city

The lanes around the clock tower and Sardar Market — spices, textiles, and the best mirchi bada and makhaniya lassi in Rajasthan.

Then Udaipur

Another 250 km south, four to five hours, arriving in the evening.

Practical

Fourteen hours door to door with about ten hours of driving. It is a long day, and it is still less time in a car than doing the two legs separately.
