Full description
The standard circuit, plus the temple in the gorge
Galta Ji is what makes this day different. It sits in a gorge in the Aravalli hills east of the city and almost no full-day itinerary includes it.
Galta Ji
Natural springs run down through a series of stone tanks — the Galta Kund at the top has never been known to dry up, and pilgrims have bathed in it for centuries.
The buildings are 18th-century pink sandstone, built into the rock rather than on it, with painted interiors that are fading in a way that makes seeing them now worth doing. Above the complex the Surya Temple faces the sunrise and gives you the whole city below.
Two troops of macaques live here, which is the nickname. Do not hold food in your hand, do not hold a phone out over a wall, and take sunglasses off your head.
Amber Fort
The hilltop complex above Maota Lake, begun in 1592. The painted Ganesh Pol gateway, the Sheesh Mahal with its ceiling of convex mirror fragments, and the Sukh Niwas, cooled by water running through channels in the marble.
Jal Mahal
From the causeway. Four of five storeys underwater, no entry.
City Palace
Still partly the residence of the former royal family, with the armoury, the textile galleries and the two silver urns in the Diwan-i-Khas — the largest silver objects in the world.
Jantar Mantar
Nineteen masonry astronomical instruments from the 1730s, UNESCO-listed, with a 27-metre sundial still accurate to about two seconds.
