From Jaipur : Morning Sunrise with Jaipur Flower Market Tour

The flower market is finished by eight

Which is why almost no visitor sees it. Jaipur's Phool Mandi runs from before first light: marigold by the sackful, roses, jasmine and tuberose, strung into garlands for the day's temple offerings and weighed out to sellers who will be at their stalls by seven.

It is loud, fast, entirely functional, and the single best twenty minutes in the city for a photographer.

The old city at dawn

Afterwards, the walled city as it wakes. Jai Singh II laid it out in 1727 on a nine-square grid with street widths fixed by rule, and at six in the morning you can actually see the plan — no traffic, no crowds, the pink walls taking the first light.

Chhoti Chopad and Badi Chopad, the great crossroads. Milk being delivered in steel cans. Chai poured from height. Temple bells and the first aartis. Sweepers, and the men who wash the pavements outside the shops before they open.

Hawa Mahal at that hour goes properly pink for about an hour, which is the only time it looks the way the photographs promise — and there is nobody in front of it.

A viewpoint

The tour usually includes a ridge or rooftop for the sunrise itself, with the whole grid of the old city below and the Aravallis behind.

Why this over a full day

Because it is a completely different city from the one you will see at eleven o'clock, and because three hours at dawn costs you nothing except a early alarm — you are back at your hotel for breakfast with the rest of the day intact.

Three hours, with pickup in the dark. Sunrise times shift through the year, so the pickup is set against your date.

Cool in winter mornings — bring a layer. The flower market floor is wet; wear shoes you do not mind.
