From Jaipur: Private Amber Fort, Jal Mahal and More Car Tour

Five hours, which covers the essentials properly

Not a full day and not a rushed half. Five hours with a private car and a guide takes in the facade, the fort and the lake with time inside each rather than a walk-through.

Hawa Mahal

Where the tour starts, and the right order — morning light is on the facade and it goes properly pink for about an hour after sunrise.

Built in 1799 by Sawai Pratap Singh as an extension of the City Palace zenana: 953 windows across five storeys, and less than a metre deep for most of its height. The lattice let the women of the court watch street processions without being seen, and it accelerates airflow to cool the corridors behind — which is where the name Palace of Winds comes from.

Amber Fort

Eleven kilometres north on a ridge above Maota Lake, begun in 1592 by Raja Man Singh, Akbar's general — which is why a Rajput fort carries Mughal inlay work.

The painted Ganesh Pol gateway, with the screened gallery above from which arrivals were watched unseen. The Sheesh Mahal, where thousands of convex mirror fragments in the ceiling turned a single candle into a sky of stars. The Sukh Niwas, cooled by water running in channels cut through the marble.

Jal Mahal

From the causeway over Man Sagar Lake. Four of its five storeys sit underwater and there is no way in — no boat and no ticket, whatever you are offered at the roadside.

Practical

Start early. Amber at nine and Amber at noon are different buildings.

Entrance fees are about ₹1,000 a head for a foreign adult on this route where not included.
