Canter or gypsy, and the difference is real

Both are open vehicles and both go into the same zones, but they are not the same experience.

A canter seats around twenty. It is cheaper, it is noisier, and on a good sighting you are looking past four other people's raised phones.

A gypsy seats six. Quieter, more manoeuvrable, and the driver can position it for you rather than for the group. For photographers it is the only real option, and a private gypsy is better still.

The park

1,300 square kilometres of dry deciduous forest, grassland and ridge, about 180 km from Jaipur — three hours each way.

Around seventy tigers live here, and Ranthambore's reputation rests on the fact that they are unusually habituated to vehicles. Several resident tigresses have been photographed so often that they are known by name across India.

Sightings are still luck. Nobody can promise one.

What you will certainly see

Sambar standing chest-deep in the lakes, chital, nilgai, langur, wild boar, and marsh crocodiles at Padam Talao. Excellent birdlife — crested serpent eagles, painted storks, kingfishers, and winter migrants on the water.

Ranthambore Fort stands inside the reserve on a 700-foot ridge: tenth century, UNESCO-listed, and still an active temple site that pilgrims walk up to on foot, through tiger country.

Three options

Car with an evening canter safari; a shared private jeep safari with lunch; or a fully private jeep safari.

Practical

Safari zones and permits are allocated by the forest department; nobody chooses their zone.

The park closes from 1 July to 30 September. October to April is the season; March and April give the best sightings as the water dries up.

Winter mornings in an open vehicle are genuinely cold. Muted colours, no perfume, voices down.
