A tiger reserve and back in a day from Jaipur.

Ranthambore is about four hours from Jaipur, which makes a single safari feasible as a long day trip if you cannot spare a night. You lose the second safari that an overnight buys, and the sighting odds with it, but you keep your Jaipur hotel and your schedule.

The park

Ranthambore is built around a tenth-century fort with dry deciduous forest grown up around it. Old gates, chhatris and a stepwell are scattered through the reserve, which gives it a look nothing else in India has.

It holds a genuine tiger population, and the animals here are habituated to vehicles — which is why sighting rates are what they are. You also get leopard, sloth bear, sambar, marsh crocodile and a very long bird list.

Options

Two at checkout: a morning safari or an evening one. Mornings are colder and generally better for sightings; evenings are warmer and the light is better for photographs.

Worth knowing

The park closes 1 July to 30 September for the monsoon. Zones 6 to 10 sometimes stay open; the core zones do not.
Safari slots are government-allocated and sell out in season and around Indian holidays. Book as early as you can — this is the real constraint.
The zone is assigned by the forest department, not chosen. Some zones have better records than others and nobody can request one honestly.
No tiger is guaranteed. Anyone who promises one is lying to you.
Twelve hours door to door, eight of them driving, for one safari. If you can spare a night, the two-day version doubles your chances.
Open vehicles are genuinely cold at dawn from December to February. Bring layers.
