Full description

Pushkar is a temple town around a lake that is said to have no bottom.

About three hours from Jaipur, Pushkar is built around a lake Hindus hold to have formed where a lotus fell from Brahma's hand. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in India and one of very few places with a temple to Brahma himself — the Jagatpita Brahma Mandir, fourteenth century, and the reason most pilgrims come.

Fifty-two ghats ring the lake and pilgrims bathe at them through the day. The town around is entirely vegetarian and alcohol-free by long custom, which gives it a markedly different feel from anywhere else in Rajasthan.

The camel safari

The desert starts at the edge of town. The safari runs out into the dunes, usually timed for late afternoon when the heat has dropped and the light is worth having. Camels are slow, high and roll considerably; it is more comfortable than it looks for the first twenty minutes and less so after an hour.

Worth knowing

Shoes come off at the ghats and the temple, and photography at the ghats is restricted. Your guide will say where.
Beware the "Pushkar Passport" scam: someone approaches you at a ghat offering a blessing, ties a thread on your wrist, then demands a large donation. Politely decline before the thread goes on.
Alcohol, meat and eggs are not sold in town. That is genuinely enforced.
The Pushkar Camel Fair runs for about a week in October or November. Extraordinary and extremely crowded — if you are travelling then, ask before booking.
