Eight hours in an auto-rickshaw, and it is the right call

From October to March a tuk-tuk is simply the best way to see Jaipur. Open on both sides, quick through traffic, small enough for the old-city lanes, and you are in the street rather than watching it through glass.

It also costs a fraction of a car, which is why this is the cheapest honest full day in the city.

Amber Fort

Eleven kilometres north on a ridge above Maota Lake, begun in 1592 by Raja Man Singh, Akbar's general. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a Rajput fort built with Mughal craftsmen — which is why Persian inlay sits next to Hindu carving.

The Ganesh Pol gateway, the Sheesh Mahal with its ceiling of convex mirror fragments, the Sukh Niwas cooled by water running in the walls, and the zenana courtyard with its twelve separate queens' apartments.

The tuk-tuk makes the climb up the ramp. Slowly, and with some noise.

Jal Mahal

From the causeway over Man Sagar Lake. Four of its five storeys sit underwater; there is no boat and no entry.

City Palace
