Full description
Pushkar, and a jeep into the dunes behind it
150 km south-west of Jaipur, about three hours. The town is the draw and the jeep safari on the fuller option is the reason to take this version rather than a plain day trip.
The lake and the temple
Hindus hold that the lake formed where Brahma dropped a lotus, and this is the principal Brahma temple anywhere — there are perhaps a dozen in the world, because Brahma is almost never worshipped directly.
Fifty-two ghats ring the water, each built by a different ruler or noble family, and pilgrims bathe at them at dawn and dusk.
The Brahma temple is 14th century in its present form on a much older site, up a flight of marble steps. Shoes off well before the entrance; leather stays in the car.
One warning worth taking: men at the ghats will offer a "Pushkar passport" blessing and then demand a large donation, sometimes persistently. A firm, polite no is all that is needed.
Savitri Temple
On the hill above, by a long staircase or cable car, with the whole lake and town below. Best in the last hour of light.
The jeep safari
Into the dunes and semi-desert around the town, usually in the late afternoon. Small, genuine sand country — not the Thar proper, which is further west — with Rajput and Bishnoi villages, and blackbuck and chinkara around the Bishnoi settlements.
The Bishnoi are worth knowing about: a sect founded in the 15th century on twenty-nine principles, several forbidding the felling of green trees or harm to animals. In 1730, three hundred and sixty-three of them were killed defending a grove of khejri trees from a maharaja's axes, which is why wildlife still grazes freely around their villages.
