Most Indian cities light up for Diwali. Jaipur competes. The municipality and the market associations run a decoration contest between the bazaars, and the result is that Johari Bazaar, Bapu Bazaar, Tripolia and the whole walled city are lit end to end in a scale of illumination that has no equivalent anywhere else in India.
The pink sandstone of the old city under that lighting is the reason people plan trips around this week.

The illuminated bazaars after dark, which is the centrepiece. Fireworks across the city. Daytime sightseeing at Amer Fort, City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal, all of which are quieter during the festival because local attention is elsewhere.
