The old city at 6am, on a bike, before it wakes up.

Jaipur's walled city is unusual in India: laid out in 1727 on a strict grid, with wide main avenues. That grid is what makes cycling here possible at all, and early morning is what makes it pleasant — the streets are empty, the light is good, and the temperature has not yet become an argument.

By nine the same route would be unrideable.

What you see

The grid itself, which is the point: nine rectangular sectors laid out to a Vedic plan, with the bazaars on the main avenues and the residential lanes behind. Nothing else in India was built like this in the eighteenth century.

The bazaars waking up — shutters going up, the first deliveries, flower sellers stringing marigold, milk being delivered in steel cans.

Hawa Mahal with nobody in front of it, which happens for about an hour a day.

The morning rituals: temple bells, people bathing at the step-tanks, chai stalls lighting up.

And the lanes behind the bazaar fronts, where block printers and lac bangle makers start work.

The bikes

Proper road and hybrid bikes — Trek, Giant and Merida — rather than whatever was in the shed. Helmets provided.

Worth knowing

It starts early, around 6 to 6:30, and that is not negotiable — it is the entire reason the tour works.
The terrain is flat and the pace is gentle. Basic cycling ability is enough; this is not a fitness ride.
Indian traffic is Indian traffic, even at six. Stay behind the guide and you will be fine.
October to March is comfortable. In May and June even 6am is warm.
Bring sunglasses and something for dust.
