Jaipur: 6-Day Rajasthan Heritage Tour with Night Food Trails

Rajasthan with the evenings planned too

Most Rajasthan itineraries end at sunset. This one carries on: a food trail on foot in each city after dark, which is when these places are at their best anyway.

Jaipur

Days of City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal and a photo stop at Jal Mahal, then Amber Fort, Nahargarh and Jaigarh on the second day.

The night trail is the Jaipur one everyone should do: kachori and mirchi vada at Rawat, a shop that has been frying since 1956 and is still queued out the door at nine at night. Lal maas if you eat meat — the fiery red mutton curry built on mathania chillies, which look terrifying and are more about colour than heat. Ghewar and mawa kachori at LMB in Johari Bazaar to finish, both of which are more sugar than any one person should manage.

Jodhpur

Mehrangarh, which rises 120 metres straight off the rock and has never been taken, with the best museum in Rajasthan inside it. Jaswant Thada in white marble below. The blue lanes around the clock tower.

The food here is different — mirchi bada, pyaaz kachori at Janta Sweet Home, makhaniya lassi thick enough to stand a spoon in, and the mawa kachori that Jodhpur claims over Jaipur.

Udaipur

Evenings on the ghats, with dal baati and rooftop kitchens looking at the lit palace.

How it runs

Private air-conditioned car with driver for all six days including the intercity legs — Jaipur to Jodhpur is about 330 km, Jodhpur to Udaipur another 250. Local guides for sightseeing, and a food guide for each night walk.

Practical

Say in advance if you are vegetarian — Rajasthani food is overwhelmingly vegetarian anyway — or if you need it without chilli. Both are routine requests.

Street food is fine if you stick to what is hot and freshly fried, which is what your guide will steer you to.
