Two hours inside Amer with someone who knows it.

No car, no city circuit, no lunch. A guide meets you at Amer Fort and walks you through it for two hours.

This is the option if you have your own transport, or you are staying near Amer, or you simply want the fort explained rather than a full day arranged.

What the walk covers

The approach up the ramp and the Suraj Pol into Jaleb Chowk, the main courtyard where the army assembled.

The Ganesh Pol, the painted gateway into the private palaces, with frescoes still holding their colour after four centuries.

The Sheesh Mahal, the mirror palace — thousands of convex mirror tiles set into wall and ceiling so a single candle multiplies across the room. The story goes that the queen was not permitted to sleep outdoors, so a ceiling of stars was built for her indoors.

The Sukh Niwas opposite, cooled by water running through channels cut in the marble — air conditioning built in the sixteenth century on top of a hill, which is an engineering achievement before it is a decorative one.

And the zenana, the women's quarters, arranged so the maharaja could visit any of his queens without the others knowing.
