The fort lit from across the water

The son-et-lumière at Amber is projected onto the fort and the ridge below it from across Maota Lake, so the whole hillside complex lights in sequence while the reflection doubles it in the water.

The narration runs through the Kachwaha dynasty — Raja Man Singh, who built the fort and served as Akbar's general; the Mughal alliances that made Amber wealthy; the shift down to the new city of Jaipur in 1727; and the four hundred years in between.

It lasts about fifty minutes.

Which performance to book

There is a Hindi show and an English one at different times each evening, and the English slot is usually the later of the two. Your booking will be set against your date, because the times shift with sunset through the year.

Why the evening is worth it

Amber in daylight is crowded, hot and full of coach parties. At night the complex is empty, the temperature has dropped, and the lit sandstone against a dark ridge is genuinely beautiful — and you are seeing it from the one angle that daytime visitors never get, which is from below and across the lake.

It also pairs well with having already been inside during the day; the narration is about rooms you have stood in.

Practical

Around three hours including transfers from Jaipur, about eleven kilometres each way.

Seating is open-air on tiered benches facing the water. From November to February Jaipur evenings drop sharply after dark — take a jacket.

The show does not run in heavy rain, and occasionally closes for maintenance or state events.

Mosquito repellent is worth having: you are sitting beside a lake at dusk.
