The one building in Jaipur worth three unhurried hours.

Amber Fort was begun in 1592 by Raja Man Singh, and it is a fort from the outside and a palace within. It sits above Maota Lake on a ridge, and the scale does not register until you are inside the first courtyard.

What you see

The Ganesh Pol, the painted gateway into the private palaces, with frescoes still holding their colour after four centuries.

The Sheesh Mahal, the mirror palace, which is what people remember. Thousands of convex mirror tiles set into the walls and ceiling so that a single candle flame multiplies across the whole room. The story is that the queen was not permitted to sleep outdoors, so a ceiling of stars was built for her indoors.

The Sukh Niwas opposite, cooled by water channels cut through the marble — air conditioning built in the sixteenth century, on top of a hill, which is an engineering feat before it is a decorative one.

And Panna Meena ka Kund, the symmetrical stepwell five minutes away that most tours skip entirely.

Go early. The fort opens at 8 and by 10:30 the courtyards are full. The Sheesh Mahal in particular is a different experience with twenty people in it rather than two hundred.
Elephant rides up to the fort are not included and we do not arrange them. The jeeps cover the same ramp.
There are a lot of steps and uneven stone. Three hours is right for doing it properly.
The light and sound show in the evening is a separate ticket, shown from the lakeside.
