Jaipur: Amer Fort, Jal Mahal & Hawa Mahal Half-Day Tour

The three buildings everyone photographs, done in a morning.

Amer Fort is the substance of the day and takes most of it. Built from 1592 above Maota Lake, a fort outside and a palace within. The Sheesh Mahal mirror chamber, the painted Ganesh Pol gateway, and the Sukh Niwas with water channels cut through the marble to cool it — sixteenth-century air conditioning, on a hilltop.

Jal Mahal sits in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, four of its five storeys underwater when the lake is full. You cannot go in and this tour does not pretend otherwise — it is a stop for the view, and with the Nahargarh hills behind it at the right hour, that view earns its ten minutes.

Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Winds, is the five-storey pink facade with 953 windows built in 1799 so royal women could watch street processions without being seen. Most visitors photograph it from the road opposite and move on. Going inside gives you the view out through those windows and a much clearer sense of what the building was for.
