Full description

A marble temple and a cow shelter, which belong together more than they sound.

Birla Mandir sits below Moti Dungri hill and is built entirely of white Makrana marble — the same quarry the Taj Mahal came from. It was completed in 1988 by the Birla industrial family, so it is not ancient, and it does not pretend to be. What makes it worth two hours is the carving and an unusual openness: alongside the Hindu figures, the stained glass and panels include Christ, Buddha, Zoroaster, Confucius and Socrates, which is a deliberate statement rather than decoration.

At night it is lit from within and the marble glows, which is when most of Jaipur comes.

The gaushala

A gaushala is a shelter for cows that are old, injured, abandoned or would otherwise be on the road. They are funded by donation and staffed largely by volunteers, and they are a part of daily religious life across India that visitors almost never see.

Going to one after the temple connects two halves of the same idea: the marble expression of it, and the daily practice. You can feed the cows, which is considered an act of merit and is also just pleasant.
