Two buildings, on foot, four hours.

City Palace and Hawa Mahal are a few minutes' walk apart inside the walled city, which makes them the natural pairing for a morning without a car.

City Palace

The royal family still lives in part of it. What is open is substantial: the Mubarak Mahal with its textiles and costumes, the Diwan-i-Khas holding the two sterling silver urns that remain the largest single pieces of silver ever made, and Pritam Niwas Chowk with four painted doorways for the four seasons. The peacock door is the one everyone photographs and it earns it.

Hawa Mahal

Built in 1799 by Sawai Pratap Singh, five storeys of pink sandstone with 953 small windows. The purpose was strict: the women of the royal household observed purdah and could not be seen on the street, so the facade let them watch processions unseen. The lattice also funnels air through the building, which is where the name comes from.

Most visitors take a photograph from the road opposite. Going inside — through the entrance round the back, which is not obvious — gives you the view out through the windows and a far clearer sense of what it was for.
