Jaipur City Sightseeing Tour – Same Day Trip by Car

7:30 am to evening, with the route planned around the crowds

Twelve hours is enough to do Jaipur in the right order rather than the convenient one: the hilltop forts before the coaches, the old city in the middle of the day, and a ridge viewpoint at the end.

7:30 — pickup

From your hotel or Jaipur airport, in a private car.

Morning: the forts

Amer Fort first, when the courtyards are still empty. Begun 1592, the Ganesh Pol gateway, the Sheesh Mahal mirror chamber, and the water-cooled Sukh Niwas.

Jaigarh above it, connected by a tunnel the royal family could use to escape, and holding Jaivana — the largest wheeled cannon ever cast, fired exactly once, in a test.

Panna Meena ka Kund below, a 16th-century stepwell of criss-crossing symmetrical staircases descending eight storeys, and almost always quiet.

Midday: the old city

Jal Mahal from the causeway. City Palace, part of it still the royal residence. Jantar Mantar, where the 27-metre Samrat Yantra still tells the time to two seconds. Hawa Mahal, 953 windows, from the street opposite.

Lunch — at a five-star hotel on the luxury option.

Afternoon and evening

The bazaars around Johari and Tripolia, where Jaipur actually makes its money: gem cutting, lac bangles, block printing, enamel work.

Then Nahargarh on the ridge for sunset, with the whole grid of the walled city laid out below and the streetlights coming up as the light drops.
