What Chokhi Dhani is

A mock Rajasthani village on 20 acres south of Jaipur, built in 1990, where the whole of the state's folk culture is performed in one place every evening. It is unashamedly a constructed experience, and it is also the only practical way to see Kalbeliya dancers, Bhopa storytellers and Terah Taali performers in a single night without travelling for a week.

Indian families come here in enormous numbers. It is not a foreigners-only attraction, and that is part of why it works.

The performances

Ghoomar, the Rajput women's circle dance with the skirts that flare on the turn. Kalbeliya, danced by the snake-charmer community, all shoulder and spine, recognised by UNESCO as intangible heritage. Bhopa-Bhopi, husband-and-wife narrative singers who perform epics in front of a painted scroll.

Plus puppet shows, acrobats, magicians, and fire performers as the night goes on.

Everything else

Camel, horse and bullock-cart rides. Mehendi artists who will paint your hands in ten minutes. Fortune tellers, potters, palm readers, archery, a small boating lake, and stalls of Rajasthani craft.

You wander. Nothing is scheduled for you.

The dinner

A full Rajasthani thali, traditionally served — you sit on the floor on a mat, eat off a brass thali, and servers come round refilling everything until you stop them. Dal baati churma, gatte ki sabzi, ker sangri, bajra roti with ghee, buttermilk, and gur for afterwards.

It is vegetarian throughout and it is unlimited.

Practical

About five hours with hotel pickup, mostly in the evening. Entry and the thali are paid at the gate under most packages; check which option you booked.

It gets busy on weekends and during the winter wedding season. Comfortable shoes — the ground is sand and stone, and you will walk more than you expect.

Two options: car with an English-speaking driver, or car with a guide as well.
