A sanctuary where the elephants are not carrying anyone.

Jaipur has a long and uncomfortable history with elephant rides up Amer Fort's ramp. Elefantastic exists as the alternative: a family-run sanctuary where rescued and retired elephants live, each with its own mahout who has usually been with that animal for years.

Nobody rides them here.

What you do

You meet the elephants and their keepers, who will tell you where each animal came from — several were working the fort ramp or the street-begging circuit before. You feed them, and the quantities surprise people: sugarcane and bananas by the armful.

You walk with them. Depending on the day you help bathe them, which they enjoy considerably more than you will stay dry.

And there is time to simply be near them, which is the part most visitors say they remember. An elephant at rest, close up and not performing, is a different animal from one on a ramp with tourists on its back.
