Time with elephants that are not working
The animals at this sanctuary outside Jaipur came from the ride lines, from wedding and temple work, or from the begging trade. None of them is ridden here, and there is no seat on the property.
What you do instead is feed, wash, and walk alongside them, with mahouts explaining what each animal came from.
Feeding
Sugarcane, bananas, melon, and jaggery balls pressed by hand. An adult elephant eats around 150 kg a day, so this is not a two-minute photo opportunity — you are beside a four-tonne animal for long enough to relax into it.
There is a briefing first: anatomy, behaviour, how to tell whether an elephant wants your company at that moment, and how the trunk works — roughly forty thousand muscles and no bone in it.
The shower
Elephant skin is two and a half centimetres thick and still sunburns, which is why they throw mud over themselves in the wild. Scrubbing one down while it sprays you on purpose is the part of the day people describe afterwards.
Walking
On the longer options, out into the village with the herd — which is the closest most people get to seeing an elephant simply being one.
The village
The sanctuary sits in Hathi Gaon, the elephant village built outside Jaipur in the 2000s so that the animals and their keepers would have trees and water rather than a city lane.

Practical
Around two and a half hours at the sanctuary, with transfers on most options.
You will get wet and muddy on any option involving water. Bring a change of clothes and shoes you do not mind ruining.
No flash photography near the animals, and stay where the mahouts put you.
