No riding. That is the point.
Elephants at this sanctuary are not ridden, and there is no howdah on site. Several of them came from the Amber Fort ride line or from temple and wedding work, which is hard on their feet and their spines. Here the day is feeding, bathing, walking and being left alone.
If you want a photograph on an elephant's back, this is the wrong booking, and you should know that before you pay rather than after.
What a visit looks like
You are introduced to a specific elephant rather than a herd, and you spend your time with that one. You will feed her — sugarcane, bananas, jaggery balls pressed by hand — and the feeding takes a while, because an adult eats close to 150 kg a day.
Then the wash. Elephant skin is two-and-a-half centimetres thick and still sunburns, which is why they throw mud over themselves in the wild. Scrubbing one with a brush in the water is the part most people did not expect to enjoy as much as they do.
The mahouts who work here have usually been with the same animal for years, and they are the most interesting people on the property. Ask them things.
The village
The sanctuary sits in Hathi Gaon, the elephant village built outside Jaipur in the 2000s so the animals and their keepers would have somewhere with trees and water rather than a city lane. The guided walk through it is included on the longer options.
Options
Shortest is photography and feeding. The middle option adds washing and the village walk. The longest adds a mud wash, which means you will be muddy too — bring a change of clothes and do not wear anything you mind.
