Jaipur has a long and uncomfortable history with elephant rides up to Amer Fort. Sanctuaries here exist as the alternative: the animals live on site, nobody rides them, and visitors feed, walk with and bathe them instead.
What you do
You meet the elephants and their mahouts, who have usually been with the same animal for years and will tell you where it came from. You feed them — sugarcane and bananas, in quantities that surprise people. You walk with them, and depending on the option you help bathe them, which they enjoy considerably more than you will stay dry.
There is time for photography, and the mahouts know the angles better than anyone.
