The city is genuinely good at night and almost nobody tours it then. The monuments are floodlit, the bazaars run until ten, the temperature drops to something pleasant, and an open jeep is the right vehicle for all of that.

In May and June it is the only sensible time to be out at all.

What you see

Hawa Mahal lit from the front, which throws the 953 windows into relief in a way daylight flattens.

The City Palace walls and the Albert Hall Museum, floodlit and surrounded by an improbable number of pigeons — the museum at night is one of the most photographed buildings in the city and it is free to look at.

The old-city bazaars in full swing: sweet shops, bangle lanes, chai stalls, and the wedding-season crowds from November to February when half of Rajasthan seems to be getting married.

Patrika Gate at Jawahar Circle if the route includes it — a painted gateway of nine arches, every surface covered, and a favourite of every photographer in the city.

And a ridge viewpoint where the whole grid of the walled city lies out below with the streetlights on.

What you do not see

Monument interiors. They close at sunset, and this is a tour of the city rather than of its rooms — worth knowing before you book.
