Skip-the-line matters at exactly one place in Jaipur

Amber Fort. It takes around five thousand visitors a day in season and the ticket queue at the base can run half an hour before you start the climb. Pre-booked entry puts you past it.

The rest of the city's monuments rarely queue, so this tour uses the advantage where it exists.

Amber Fort

Begun in 1592 by Raja Man Singh, Akbar's general, on a ridge in the Aravalli hills above Maota Lake. Rajput courtyards built with Mughal craftsmen, which is why a Hindu fort has Persian inlay work in it.

The Ganesh Pol gateway, painted plaster over stone, with a screened gallery above from which the women of the court watched arrivals unseen. The Sheesh Mahal, where thousands of convex mirror fragments were set so a single candle read as a sky full of stars. The Sukh Niwas across the courtyard, cooled by water running in channels cut through the marble.

And the zenana: twelve queens' apartments around one courtyard, with corridors arranged so the maharaja could visit one without the others knowing which.

Jal Mahal

A photo stop from the causeway. Four of its five storeys sit under Man Sagar Lake and there is no entry, whatever you are offered at the roadside.

City Palace

Still partly the residence of the former royal family — the flag over Chandra Mahal tells you whether they are in. Courtyards, the armoury, the textile rooms, and the two silver urns cast so a maharaja could carry Ganges water to England.

Jantar Mantar

Nineteen masonry astronomical instruments, UNESCO-listed, built by Jai Singh II, who was an astronomer before he founded the city. The 27-metre Samrat Yantra sundial still reads local time to within a couple of seconds.
