Starts at Hawa Mahal, which is the right way round

Most tours drive past Hawa Mahal on the way back from Amber, when the sun is behind it. Going there first means morning light on the facade — and that is the hour the building was designed for.

Hawa Mahal

The Palace of Breeze, built in 1799 by Sawai Pratap Singh as an extension of the City Palace zenana. 953 windows across five storeys, and less than a metre deep for most of its height: it is a screen, not a palace, built so the women of the court could watch street processions without being seen from the road.

The lattice also works as air conditioning — the small openings accelerate airflow and cool the corridors behind, which is where the name comes from.

Amber Fort

The hilltop complex above Maota Lake, begun 1592 by Raja Man Singh, Akbar's general. The Ganesh Pol gateway, the Sheesh Mahal with its ceiling of mirror fragments, and the Sukh Niwas, cooled by water channels cut through its marble walls.

The zenana courtyard held twelve queens' apartments arranged so that none overlooked another.

Jal Mahal

A photo stop from the causeway. Four of its five storeys are under Man Sagar Lake and there is no way in — no boat and no ticket, whatever you are offered at the roadside.

City Palace

Still partly the residence of the former royal family. The armoury, the textile galleries, and the two silver urns in the Diwan-i-Khas — the largest silver objects in the world, cast so a maharaja could carry Ganges water to England.

Jantar Mantar

Nineteen masonry astronomical instruments built by Jai Singh II, who was an astronomer before he founded a city. UNESCO-listed, and the 27-metre Samrat Yantra sundial still reads local time to within a couple of seconds.
