A tuk-tuk for the whole day, and it is the right vehicle here.

Jaipur's bazaar lanes are narrow and permanently busy, and a car has to skirt around most of them. A tuk-tuk goes down them and parks anywhere. Over eight hours that adds up to a materially different day — you end up somewhere a car tour drives past.

It is also open-sided, which between October and March is the best way to see the city and in May is not.

Where you go

Amer Fort above Maota Lake — the Sheesh Mahal mirror chamber, the painted Ganesh Pol, the water-cooled Sukh Niwas.

Panna Meena ka Kund five minutes below it, the eight-storey stepwell with criss-crossing symmetrical staircases, usually empty.

City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal in the walled city, close enough together to walk between while the tuk-tuk waits.

Jal Mahal on Man Sagar Lake as a view stop, and the old city lanes — block printers, lac bangle makers, the bazaars behind the main streets.
