Jaipur Full-Day Private Tour with Guide & Lunch

One day, done properly

Jaipur's major sites are spread across 15 km, and the two that matter most sit at opposite ends of that. Doing it by rickshaw means spending the day negotiating fares in the sun. A private car and a guide for the day removes both problems, and lunch is built in so nobody is making decisions at two in the afternoon on an empty stomach.

Amber Fort

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, built from 1592 onward by Raja Man Singh, in the pale yellow and pink sandstone of the local hills. The Ganesh Pol gateway, the Sheesh Mahal where mirror fragments were set so that candlelight filled the room, and the Sukh Niwas where water ran through channels in the wall as air conditioning four hundred years before the phrase existed.

Go early. By eleven the courtyards fill.

Jal Mahal

A photo stop on the road back. The palace has five storeys and four of them are under Man Sagar Lake; there is no boat and no entry, and any tour that implies otherwise is selling you something.

City Palace

Mughal and Rajput architecture around a sequence of courtyards, part of it still the residence of the former ruling family. The armoury and the textile rooms are the parts worth slowing down for.

Jantar Mantar

An 18th-century observatory of nineteen masonry instruments, UNESCO-listed, including the 27-metre Samrat Yantra sundial — still accurate to about two seconds.

Hawa Mahal

953 windows, five storeys, barely a metre deep in places. Built so the women of the court could watch the street without being seen from it.

Lunch

At a Rajasthani restaurant, included. Tell us in advance about vegetarian, Jain or no-chilli requirements and the kitchen will handle it.
