Jaipur: Full Day Sightseeing Tour w/ Boat Ride on Maota Lake

The lake below the fort

Everybody photographs Maota Lake from the ramparts of Amber Fort. Almost nobody goes down onto it. A boat on the water gives you the one view of the fort that the crowds above do not have — the whole hillside complex rising out of the reflection, with the Kesar Kyari garden laid out in its saffron-bed pattern in the middle of the water.

That is the piece this day adds to the standard circuit.

Amber Fort

Begun in 1592 by Raja Man Singh, in pale sandstone and marble on a ridge above the lake. The Ganesh Pol gateway, the Sheesh Mahal with its mirrored ceiling built so that a single candle filled the room, and the Sukh Niwas, cooled by water channels running through the walls four hundred years before air conditioning.

Go early. By eleven the courtyards are full.

Then the boat

A quiet stretch on Maota, which was the fort's water supply — the reason the complex was built on that particular hill.

The rest of the day

Jal Mahal from the causeway, four storeys underwater. City Palace, still partly the royal residence, and Jantar Mantar next door with its 27-metre masonry sundial. Hawa Mahal, the honeycomb screen of 953 windows.

And the bazaars, if the day still has room.

Three options

Private tuk-tuk with an English-speaking driver — open, cheap, and the pleasant choice from October to March. Private car with driver, which is the sensible call in summer. Or the full version with car, driver, a licensed guide and the boat ride included.

Practical

Around eight hours with hotel pickup. Entrance fees are paid at each site — Amber Fort is ₹550 for foreign nationals, City Palace and Jantar Mantar separately.

The boat depends on the water level, which drops late in the dry season.
