The palace, and the temple inside its grounds.

City Palace occupies a seventh of the walled city and the royal family still lives in part of it, which is why the private apartments in Chandra Mahal are closed and the rest is not. What you see is the Mubarak Mahal with its textile and costume collection, the Diwan-i-Khas holding two sterling silver urns that are the largest single pieces of silver in the world, made so a maharaja could carry Ganges water to England in 1901, and the Pritam Niwas Chowk with its four painted doorways for the four seasons. The peacock door is the one everybody photographs, and it earns it.

Govind Devji Temple sits within the palace complex and is the single most important temple in Jaipur. The image of Krishna here was brought from Vrindavan in the seventeenth century to keep it safe from Aurangzeb. It is a working temple, not a monument, and it runs on the aarti schedule: seven daily viewings when the curtains open, the deity is revealed, and several hundred people sing. If your visit coincides with one, that is the memory you take home, not the palace.
