Entrance fees across Jaipur's main sites come to roughly ₹1,600 per foreign national, paid at four separate counters. Having them bundled removes the single most tedious part of the day.

What you see

Amer Fort, from 1592, above Maota Lake — the Sheesh Mahal mirror chamber, the painted Ganesh Pol, and the water-cooled Sukh Niwas. Two to three hours here, which is what it deserves.

City Palace, still partly lived in by the royal family. The Mubarak Mahal textile collection, the two enormous sterling silver urns in the Diwan-i-Khas, and the four painted seasonal doorways of Pritam Niwas Chowk — the peacock door being the one everybody photographs.

Jantar Mantar, the eighteenth-century observatory. Nineteen stone instruments that still work, including the Samrat Yantra, a 27-metre sundial accurate to two seconds.

Hawa Mahal, the five-storey facade with 953 windows, built in 1799 so royal women could watch street processions unseen.
