Jaipur Half-Day: Flower Market, Amber Fort & Enjoy Boat Ride

The flower market is the reason to book this one

Jaipur's Phool Mandi trades from before first light and is finished by eight, which is why almost no visitor sees it. Marigold by the sackful, roses, jasmine and tuberose, strung into garlands for the day's temple offerings and weighed out to sellers who will be at their stalls by seven.

It is loud, wet underfoot, entirely functional, and the best twenty minutes in the city for a camera.

Amber Fort

Then up to the hilltop complex above Maota Lake, begun in 1592 by Raja Man Singh — and early enough that the courtyards are still empty.

The painted Ganesh Pol gateway, with a screened gallery above from which the women of the court watched arrivals unseen. The Sheesh Mahal, set with thousands of convex mirror fragments so a single candle read as a ceiling of stars. The Sukh Niwas, cooled by water running in channels cut through the marble.

The boat on Maota Lake

This is the piece nobody else includes. Everyone photographs the lake from the ramparts; almost nobody goes down onto it.

From the water you get the one view of Amber the crowds above do not have — the whole hillside complex rising out of its reflection, with the Kesar Kyari garden laid out in the middle of the lake in its saffron-bed pattern.

Maota was the fort's water supply, and the reason the complex was built on that particular hill.

Five hours, with a pickup before dawn — the whole tour depends on it.

The boat depends on the water level, which drops late in the dry season.
