Jaipur: Half-Day Heritage Walking Tour with Local Market

A walk, with a start time that suits you

This one runs on the half hour from seven in the morning and again through the afternoon and early evening, which is unusually flexible — most walks have one departure and you fit around it.

Morning is cooler and the markets are opening. Late afternoon is warmer and the bazaars are at full volume. Both work; pick by your own body clock.

The old city

Jai Singh II laid Jaipur out in 1727 on a nine-square grid taken from Hindu architectural treatises — the first planned city in India, with street widths fixed by rule and each trade allocated its own block. On foot, that plan is visible; from a car it is not.

Chhoti Chopad and Badi Chopad, the great crossroads. The painted gateways. The havelis behind them, most still lived in.

Hawa Mahal from the street opposite — 953 windows, five storeys, and less than a metre deep for most of its height. A screen built in 1799 so the women of the court could watch processions unseen.

City Palace and Jantar Mantar from outside, with your guide explaining what is inside if you want to come back with a ticket.

The markets

The part this walk is really about.

Johari Bazaar for jewellery — kundan, where stones are set in pure gold foil without claws, and meenakari enamel fired onto the back of the same piece. Tripolia and Maniharon ka Rasta for lac bangles, made over a flame while you watch. Bapu Bazaar for block-printed cloth and mojari slippers.

And the food stalls: pyaaz kachori, mirchi vada, lassi in a clay kulhad.

Temples

The small shrines inside the residential blocks, which see no visitors at all, and Govind Dev Ji in the palace gardens if the timing matches an aarti.

Practical

Three hours on foot on uneven stone and through traffic. Flat shoes, water, and a scarf for the temples.

Monument entry is not included; the walk covers exteriors, streets and free sites.
