Full description

Marwari horses, and why they look like that

The breed you will probably ride is Marwari — the Rajput cavalry horse, bred in this region for centuries, and instantly identifiable by ears that curve inward until the tips touch.

They were bred for desert war: hardy, able to work on very little water, and with a natural ambling gait called the revaal that a rider can sit for hours without being shaken apart. Rajput accounts describe them refusing to leave a fallen rider.

The breed nearly died out after independence when the cavalry had no purpose and the estates could not feed them. It survives because a handful of breeders in Rajasthan kept going.

The ride

Out of the city into the Aravalli foothills, through farmland and small villages — millet fields, khejri trees, women carrying water, children who will run alongside.

This is genuinely rural Rajasthan twenty minutes from a UNESCO city, and on a horse you reach parts of it that no road goes to.

There is usually a stop for tea in a village, and the ecology of the Aravallis is worth having pointed out — this is one of the oldest mountain ranges on earth, older than the Himalaya by a long way.

Experience level

Say honestly what yours is. Complete beginners are matched with a calm horse and led at a walk; experienced riders can trot and canter in open country.

Helmets are provided and should be worn. Long trousers and closed shoes with a small heel — no sandals and no shorts, because stirrup leathers and horse hair are unkind to bare legs.

Practical

Around four hours including transfers and the briefing.

October to March is comfortable. April to June is too hot for the horses as much as for you, and rides run at dawn in those months.
