Jaipur cuts most of the world's coloured gemstones, and almost no visitor sees how.

The city has been a gem-cutting centre since the eighteenth century, and today a very large share of the world's emeralds, rubies and other coloured stones pass through Jaipur's workshops to be cut and polished. It happens in back-street workshops that visitors never enter, and the retail shops that sell to tourists are the last link in a long chain.

This tour goes to the other end of it.

What the day covers

A guided factory tour where cutting and polishing is being done — the wheels, the water, the loupes, and the people who have done this for thirty years.

A gemstone learning session: how a stone is graded, what carat actually measures, how colour and clarity are judged, and — usefully — how a treated or synthetic stone is identified. That last part is worth the tour on its own if you intend to buy anything in India.

And a jewellery design session where you work on a piece yourself.
