A leopard reserve inside the city.

Jhalana is unusual: a leopard reserve of about 23 square kilometres sitting inside Jaipur's municipal boundary, twenty minutes from the walled city. Amagarh, opened more recently, sits on the other side. Between them they hold a well-studied leopard population that has been photographed and named for years.

Because the terrain is dry scrub on low hills rather than dense forest, sighting rates here are genuinely high — considerably better than most tiger reserves, and you do not lose a day travelling to it.

What else is there

Striped hyena, jackal, desert fox, jungle cat, nilgai, Indian palm civet, and around 100 bird species. The old Jhalana fort ruins and a Shiva temple sit inside the reserve.

The safari

About three hours in a 4x4, run in fixed morning and evening slots. Morning is cooler; evening is when leopards are most active and the light is better.

Worth knowing

Slots are limited and government-controlled, and sell out in season. Book ahead.
No sighting is guaranteed, though Jhalana's rates are among the best in India for leopards.
A shared jeep means other people and their noise. If photography matters, take the private option — it is the difference between a jeep that waits and one that moves on.
Morning safaris in December and January are cold in an open vehicle. Bring layers.
Keep your voice down and stay seated. Leopards move off from noise, which is the usual reason a group sees nothing.
