Full description
Leopards twenty minutes from the City Palace
Jhalana is 23 square kilometres of dry forest inside Jaipur's city limits, and it holds one of the densest leopard populations anywhere in India — somewhere around thirty to forty animals in that small area.
It was a royal hunting preserve, then neglected scrub, and it opened as a leopard reserve in 2017. The fact that big cats live alongside a city of four million, hunting the nilgai and peafowl in the same scrub, is genuinely unusual.
The safari
An open 4x4 on forest trails with a naturalist and a forest department guide. Two slots a day, morning and afternoon.
Sightings run at roughly 60 to 70 percent in the good months, which is high for a wild leopard anywhere in the world. The animals are not baited or fed — the density is simply that high and they are used to vehicles.
What else is in there
Striped hyena, jackal, desert fox, nilgai, chital, Indian hare, porcupine and mongoose.
The birding is strong: Indian pitta in the monsoon, paradise flycatchers, several owl species, and raptors over the ridge.
There are also the ruins of a stepwell and a small temple inside the forest, and the Aravalli ridge gives you Jaipur's skyline from an angle no tour bus reaches.
Practical
Around five hours including hotel pickup and the drive in.
Morning slots see more. October to June is the season; the monsoon closes the trails.
Wear muted colours, skip the perfume, and keep your voice down — the forest is small and sound carries much further than you expect.
Permits are limited per slot and released in advance, so book early.
Bring a long lens if you have one. A phone will not do a leopard at forty metres justice, and that is the usual distance.
