Jaipur: Lac Work & Bangle-Making Workshop with Artisan

Lac, and why Jaipur is where it is made

Lac is a resin secreted by an insect on host trees, scraped off, refined and coloured. Rajasthan has worked it for centuries, and the bangle lanes off Tripolia Bazaar in Jaipur — Maniharon ka Rasta, literally the bangle-makers' street — are the centre of it.

The craft runs in families, and there are fewer of them each decade. A workshop is how they survive alongside the shops.

How a lac bangle is made

The artisan softens a stick of lac over a small open flame until it is workable, like warm toffee. It is rolled on a stone slab to mix in the colour, then wound around a wooden mandrel sized to the wrist, and the ends are joined by heat and pressure alone — no glue.

While it is still soft, mirrors, glass or stones are pressed into the surface. That has to happen in a very short window, and getting it wrong is the part everybody does at least once.

Then it cools and hardens, and it is finished.

What you learn by doing it

Why hand-made lac bangles have slight irregularities and machine-made resin ones do not. How the colours are layered so a bangle reads two-tone. And how fast the material goes from workable to useless, which is the whole skill.

You will also never again think ₹200 is a lot for one.

You take them home

The bangles you make. Sizing matters — Indian bangles go on over the knuckles rather than clasping, so the artisan will measure your hand before you start.

Practical

Around four hours in a working studio.

There is an open flame and warm resin involved. The artisan handles the hot stage; you work the material once it is safe to touch, and it is not dangerous, but do not wear anything loose at the wrist.
