A temple in a gorge, and the sun temple above it

A short, focused tour of two sites in the Aravalli hills east of Jaipur that almost no day-tour itinerary has time for.

Galta Ji

A temple complex wedged into a gorge in the hills, ten kilometres from the old city. Natural springs run down through a series of stone tanks — the Galta Kund at the top has never been known to dry up, and pilgrims have bathed in it for centuries.

The buildings are 18th-century pink sandstone with painted interiors that are fading in a way that makes seeing them now worth doing. The complex is built into the rock rather than on it, which is why the whole thing feels hidden until you are inside it.

About the monkeys

Two troops live here — rhesus macaques and langurs — which is where the nickname comes from.

They are wild animals. Do not hold food in your hand, do not hold a phone out over a wall, and take sunglasses off the top of your head. Follow that and they will ignore you entirely.

Surya Temple

On the ridge above the complex, dedicated to the sun and facing the sunrise, reached by a walk up the gorge path.

From up there the whole city lies out below — and at either end of the day it is one of the best viewpoints in Jaipur, with almost nobody on it.

The walk is steep in places and worth the effort.

What is expected

Shoes off at the temples, shoulders and knees covered. No photography inside the shrines. Leather belts and bags are best left in the car.

It is an active pilgrimage site rather than a monument, and you may find a puja or a bathing ritual in progress. Your guide will tell you where to stand.
