An open tuk-tuk, a local driver, and the two best hours of the Jaipur day that no standard tour covers.

Sunset at Galta Ji

The temple complex in a gorge in the Aravallis east of the city, with natural springs feeding a series of stone tanks. The buildings are 18th-century pink sandstone built into the rock, and pilgrims have bathed in the Galta Kund at the top for centuries.

The Surya Temple on the ridge above is where you watch the sun go down — the whole city laid out below, and almost nobody up there.

The macaques live here, which is the nickname. Do not hold food in your hand, do not hold your phone out over a wall, and take sunglasses off your head.

Then the city after dark

Hawa Mahal floodlit from the front, which throws the 953 windows into relief in a way daylight flattens.

The City Palace walls, and the Albert Hall Museum — lit, reflected, and surrounded by an improbable number of pigeons. It is the most photographed building in Jaipur at night and free to look at.

The old-city bazaars in full swing: sweet shops frying, bangle lanes, chai stalls, and the wedding-season crowds from November to February.

And the food, if you want it — kachori, jalebi, lassi in a clay kulhad, wherever your driver rates.

What you will not see

Monument interiors. They close at sunset. This is a tour of the city rather than its rooms, and it is priced accordingly.

Practical

Around four hours, with hotel pickup timed against sunset, which shifts through the year.

A tuk-tuk is open, and from November to February Jaipur evenings drop sharply after dark — take a jacket.

Shoes off at the temple, shoulders and knees covered. Entry there is free or a nominal donation.
